SOMETIMES ALL YOU NEED IS A SURPRISE

I like surprises. I told myself that the only chocolate I could eat this year had to be served by a beautiful woman. I’m flabbergasted with my own creativity, and blown away by quality food.  If you have these same character traits, don’t be foolish, go to the Gilead café.

The décor at Gilead is warming and welcoming. The scent of locally cooked goods settles your nose upon arrival. The cafe itself is relatively small, however the open kitchen and storefront style counter open the room like an opportunity to pursue greatness. Help yourself style seating and refreshments, and a fireplace, provide a relaxing environment to cherish fine food.

A fusion of European and North American taste, experience and knowledge best describes the 10-foot tall chalkboard menu that changes daily. The counter front is stacked with fresh homemade produce (like freshly prepared potato chips and pasta). Finally, an array of succulent pastries displayed through a glass display provides evidence to Jamie Kennedy’s great talent - creating delectable food.

I love knowing that I deserve the best. Gilead café offers some of the most tasteful café dining in Toronto. The organic local produce, combined with chef Jamie Kennedy knowledge is a lethal combination. The combo is like Tim Duncan and David Robinson, or Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte or Chris Farley and Adam Sandler or me and a group of well-endowed woman. My experience at the Gilead Cafe was like falling in love with a European beauty- biblical/historic.

I cherished everything served, as you and I always do. To start I was blessed with a chicken and vegetable soup with a beef infused broth. The daily poutine, and a small taste of macaroni and cheese provided a nice transition to the conclusion of my meal. To finalize, I had a plate of aged cheese, locally grown apples, and LBJ style quality crackers.

The soups sweet beef based broth and assortment of flavorful soft textured vegetables settled me internally with its warmth and sweetness. The soup was so sweet it triggered my memory of kissing pretty girls in the summer after eating ice cream.  The chicken was tender and perfectly cooked. It tasted clean/organic and burst with flavor after every bite. The daily poutine had Bolognese style sauce in replacement of gravy, and goat milk based cheese curds. The Bolognese sauce worked well with the goat cheese curds. The tomatoes sweetness cut the tartness of the cheese creating a nice combination. The base of the dish was crunchy, salty and perfectly fried. The dish was like eating in the company of radiant Italian and French woman-unforgettable. The macaroni and cheese comes in three small dishes - all distinct in taste. I only tasted one, the sauce was extremely rich and creamy, and the pasta was soft in texture. The dish was good, but by no means was the highlight of my experience, considering I didn’t have the dish in its entirety.

Choice is important while dining, and in life. Never limit yourself to one option; otherwise you’ll forever be seeking excitement and change.

The last dish prepared by Jamie Kennedy was simplistic and awesome. His cheese plate dish is served on a dark piece of thickly sliced wood (bark in tact). The bright green lettuce contrasted with the dark wood is like staring into a summer forest. 3 types of aged cheese and freshly sliced apples and crackers provide the final accents to an affluently constructed dish. The crackers served have a hint of graham cracker/cinnamon. The salty sweet combination in the cracker made me happy, and will do the same for you.

If you haven’t experienced the Gilead café than you should go immediately. It’s not the cheapest café in Toronto, but you pay for what you get. I met Jamie Kennedy that day and his personality is like the café, tasteful. He’s opened a bistro style menu for dinner that started as of Jan 7th 2010.

Surprising yourself with your own ability is the first step to achieving your fullest potential and greatness. I feel like Jamie Kennedy has achieved that with Gilead café.
